Gist: The post's core claim is that most coding-agent token waste is not reasoning. It is I/O: reading large files, summarizing obvious context, and producing boilerplate that follows nearby patterns. Spotify's example uses Portal AiKA Modes as cheap, ephemeral worker agents. A bulk-reader mode reads multiple large files and answers a narrow question. A code-writer mode generates predictable tests, config, stubs, or pattern-matched code from a spec plus a reference file.
The important part is enforcement. A Claude Code plugin called shunt uses PreToolUse hooks to block expensive reads before they happen. Large Read calls and shell reads like cat, head, tail, less, and more are redirected to the bulk-reader path, while targeted reads still pass through when Claude needs a specific section for editing. Scripts then call the Portal CLI, pass files to the worker model, and return a compact answer or write generated code directly to disk.
Spotify reports around 90% mean bulk-read token savings in a Java monorepo benchmark. The caveats are the useful part: do not delegate subtle reasoning, debugging, architecture, or safety-critical code to the cheaper worker. The worker missed a thread-safety bug that Claude caught once it had the right context. Latency also matters, so delegation only pays off above a threshold.
