VMs are not enough for cyber-capable agents
If capable agents can autonomously find and chain VM escape paths, agent sandboxes need to be designed as serious containment systems rather than normal development VMs.

What it is: Trail of Bits' Patch the Planet write-up arguing that ordinary VMs are no longer enough containment for cyber-capable agents.
Gist: Trail of Bits gave preview access to GPT 5.6-Cyber a deliberately adversarial task: escape a QEMU/KVM VM used as an agent sandbox. The agent reportedly broke out multiple times. First it leaned on recently disclosed host-side issues, then on bugs that had been fixed upstream but not fully treated as security updates in the local distribution, and finally on a chain that included newly found bugs after the evaluator rebuilt QEMU and dependencies from upstream.
The important part is not the exploit chain. It is the operating model. The agent worked for hours, searched source code and papers, wrote small test programs, abandoned dead ends, kept state over long horizons, and iterated toward a reliable escape with little human steering. That makes the sandbox look less like a convenience boundary and more like a target being worked by a persistent attacker.
The defensive takeaway is clear: do not assume “inside a VM” is enough. Reduce the exposed surface area, avoid unnecessary display/network/shared-state paths, keep host kernels and virtualization stacks close to upstream security fixes, restrict credentials and network reach, log and monitor actively, limit run duration, and reset environments between runs. Trail of Bits points to Firecracker-style minimal virtualization as a harder baseline than a general-purpose desktop VM, while still warning that even that needs careful operation.
