Cloudflare WriteGuard for MCP servers
WriteGuard is a concrete pattern for moving MCP from read-only search tools to write-capable agent infrastructure without relying on every user or client harness to configure safety correctly.

What it is: Cloudflare's announcement of WriteGuard, a policy, attribution, and audit layer for write-capable MCP servers, coming to Cloudflare MCP server portals in private beta.
Gist: The motivating problem is simple: once agents can write to Jira, GitLab, Google Workspace, internal wikis, or operational systems, client-side prompts and user discipline are not enough. Cloudflare says its internal MCP portal grew from 13 read-only servers to 27 servers, and teams wanted tools that could take action. Before expanding internal write access, they built WriteGuard as a shared layer in front of MCP tool handlers.
WriteGuard gives each tool policy metadata: enabled state, risk tier, and labeling configuration. It can pass read-only calls through, enrich supported writes with agent attribution, emit scrubbed audit events, or block an action before the handler runs. Cloudflare's example risk ladder goes from read-only actions, to low-impact writes like reactions, to contained writes like comments or issue-field updates, to critical actions like merges, production deploys, or bulk deletes.
The useful design choice is keeping human identity primary while adding agent context. Agents still operate with the employee's permissions through Access and OAuth, so Joe's agent cannot do what Joe cannot do. WriteGuard adds MCP client and session context so downstream systems and audit logs can distinguish Joe from Joe's agent session. The audit event records server, tool, risk tier, outcome, user, client, and duration while omitting secret or sensitive values.
Cloudflare's GitLab example makes the model concrete: get_merge_request passes through as read-only, create_mr_note is a contained write with attribution added to the note, and merge_mr is critical and blocked unless the policy allows it.
