AI products are creating interface conventions that may outlive the current wave of chat apps. The useful question is which signals are merely fashionable and which become durable software language.

What it is: Jim Nielsen's short post on the emerging visual and interaction language around AI software.

Gist: Nielsen frames AI as another computing zeitgeist that is producing its own design idioms. Some will disappear as fashion. Some may sink into the common language of software, the way the hamburger menu came from mobile constraints and then spread everywhere.

The obvious symbols are sparkles and rainbow gradients, which now read as "AI" almost by default. The more interesting patterns are interaction details: streaming text as the native chat-interface signal, shimmering text as a "thinking" or async-work indicator, and tiny thin icons in desktop AI apps that clash with platform-native application grain. He also points to cream and beige palettes, orange accents, serif type, and UI controls that feel nondeterministic because the interface repaints around the user's action.

The post is less a taxonomy than a prompt: which parts of today's AI aesthetic are just vibes, and which will become durable interaction conventions?
