Update, 2026-07-30: Unsloth has published Kimi K3 GGUFs and a local-run guide that goes a different route from Pipe’s expert-pruned MLX port. Their headline quant is UD-IQ1_S: 594 GB, about 62% smaller than the 1.56 TB lossless version, with reported 78.875% top-1 agreement and 2.5789 perplexity. The practical requirement is still huge: their own table says the 1-bit S tier needs about 610 GB total memory, while 2-bit and lossless tiers run from 726 GB to 1.6 TB. The interesting part is the deployment stack: Unsloth’s Dynamic GGUF calibration, a llama.cpp fork/PR for Kimi K3 vision support, Unsloth Studio offloading, thinking-effort controls, and explicit guidance that RAM+VRAM should roughly match quant size or disk offload gets slow.

Update, 2026-07-29: Pipe Network has published an MLX port of Kimi K3 that makes the deployment story more concrete, but also corrects the tweet-sized claim. The repo says nothing runs on a single Mac as-is: the smallest published tier is about 870 GB against Apple Silicon’s current 512 GB ceiling. The useful systems work is the path toward local/Apple deployment: a streaming converter that avoids materializing the full model, bit-exact MXFP4 handling, MLX-compatible text/vision wrappers, and REAP expert pruning that produces published 451 GB and 350 GB tiers by keeping only workload-relevant experts.

Update, 2026-07-27: Moonshot has now released the Kimi K3 model weights and technical report. The release post describes K3 as a 2.8T MoE model with 104B activated parameters, native visual understanding, and a 1M-token context window. The report and model card add the concrete architecture: 93 layers, 69 KDA plus 24 Gated MLA attention layers, 896 routed experts with 16 selected per token, 160K vocabulary, MoonViT-V2 vision encoder, and MXFP4 weights with MXFP8 activations from quantization-aware training.

What it is: Moonshot AI introducing Kimi K3, a 2.8T-parameter open frontier model with native vision, 1M context, sparse MoE routing, and an explicitly agentic product/deployment story.

Gist: The interesting move is not just scale. Kimi is positioning K3 as a genuinely open frontier model designed for long-horizon coding, knowledge work, and multimodal agent loops, while being unusually concrete about architecture and infra: KDA, AttnRes, 16-of-896 experts, quantization-aware training from SFT onward, 64+ accelerator supernode deployment, and vLLM support for KDA prefill caching. The product story is also unusually agent-first: coding benchmarks run through harnesses, examples center on kernel optimization, compiler construction, research automation, dashboards, widgets, and recursive self-improvement workflows, and the release notes are explicit that UX still trails Claude Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 Sol despite strong raw benchmark performance.

The technical report also sharpens the systems angle: Kimi claims roughly 2.5x better scaling efficiency over Kimi K2 from KDA, AttnRes, Stable LatentMoE, and training/data recipe changes; MoonEP-style balanced expert-parallel execution with static shapes and zero-copy communication; and million-token agentic RL with persistent rollout and sandbox state. This is less a simple model-card launch and more a full-stack frontier-model release: weights, report, attention kernels, MoE communication, and agent-environment infrastructure.
